Common Causes of Headaches

Headaches are a part of life for many of us, but you don't have to suffer forever! The cause of your headache may be different than someone else's, but there are usually clear reasons why you might be getting a certain type of headache

What Causes Each Type of Headache?

Tension headaches are caused by muscle contractions. This results from the head and neck being in one position for too long, such as looking down at a phone screen. Colds, the flu, eye strain and stress can also cause tension headaches.
Sinus headaches can be caused by an infection in the sinuses, which is called sinusitis. The sinuses and nasal cavities become inflamed and tender. Sinusitis is often found in conjunction with other illnesses, like the flu or common cold.

Cluster headaches occur in patterns, or clusters, in the face. The cause of cluster headaches isn't quite clear to scientists. They can result from increased histamine, a chemical released during an allergic response. Other contributing factors can include alcohol, cigarettes, high altitudes, exercise and some medications.

Migraine headaches are also somewhat of a mystery. Migraines are unlike other headaches since they are caused by abnormal or irregular brain activity. The cause of this activity is different in different people. Stress, hormones, caffeine withdrawal and stress can all cause migraines.

Identifying and Eliminating the Cause of Your Headache

After identifying what type of headache you have, pay attention to what seems to trigger it. If you're sick with a cold or the flu, you can expect sinus headaches to end once your infection or illness is gone. Cut back on alcohol consumption and try hard to cut down or even quit smoking. You may find it helps ease many types of headaches.

Managing stress can help you prevent migraines and tension headaches. Hours you spend on mobile phones and computers can contribute to muscle tension and eye strain, which can quickly manifest as digital headaches. Try to manage the amount of time you spend on these devices. You may use them for work, play and social interaction, but be aware of your body's signals and cut back on non-essential use whenever you can.

VANQUISH® is indicated for tension headaches. If you have a cluster headache, sinus headache, migraine headache or any other type of headache you may want to consult a doctor.
